As consumers in today’s world, we have to consider how our choices impact the environment.
One brand that's leading the charge in eco-conscious beauty is L'OCCITANE. Known for its luxurious, nature-inspired products, L'OCCITANE is also a pioneer when it comes to sustainability. They’re demonstrating how there are more ways than one to consider the planet when looking after your skin.
The Power of Eco-Refills
L'OCCITANE set a precedent in the beauty industry back in 2008, when they introduced eco-refills. These eco-refills are a clever way to cut down on packaging waste, where on average, L'OCCITANE’s eco-refills use 85% less plastic than their standard bottles. That's a huge reduction in plastic waste. Imagine the impact if we all made the switch! They have eco-refill options for their best selling products, including the Almond Shower Oil (a personal favourite).
Solid Shampoo Bars and Soaps
If you want to avoid plastic entirely, L'OCCITANE have expanded their eco-friendly offerings with solid shampoo bars and soaps. These solid alternatives are perfect because they require minimal packaging—no more bulky plastic bottles cluttering up your shower. They’re also travel-friendly, taking up less space and eliminating the worry of leaks in your luggage.
L'OCCITANE’s shampoo bars are formulated with natural ingredients and are just as effective as their liquid counterparts. Plus, they last longer, providing great value and reducing the frequency of repurchasing. These bars are proof that sustainability doesn't mean sacrificing quality or luxury.
Refill Fountains and Forever Bottles
L'OCCITANE’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at eco-refills and solid products. In 17 boutiques across the UK, the brand has introduced refill fountains! You can fill up your forever bottle with products directly from the taps. We love this initiative as it not only cuts down on single-use plastic but it encourages us all to reuse containers that we already own. We personally love that there is a refill fountain in their Manchester’s Trafford Centre shop.
Beyond Products
L'OCCITANE’s dedication to the planet is further evidenced by its B-Corp certification, which means they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance. B-Corp status isn't just about doing less harm—it’s about being a force for good. L'OCCITANE prioritises traditional and organic farming practices, ensuring soil health and enhancing biodiversity, as well as preserving nature through planting native trees and installing beehives.
L'OCCITANE’s commitment extends to its sourcing practices, with fair trade-certified cooperatives in Burkina Faso and Ghana providing shea butter—a key ingredient in many of their products.
As well as this, they support their own employees by paying them a Real Living Wage, something we love to see!
The B-Corp certification is an incredible achievement for any brand, taking steps to make the consumer world a more sustainable place.
Small Changes, Big Impact
Switching to eco-refills and solid products might seem like a small step, but every small change adds up. This is especially true when multiple people make the same change. L'OCCITANE makes it easy to choose sustainability without compromising on quality or luxury. Next time you’re shopping for beauty products, consider being part of a movement to reduce waste in our homes.
